Kolashin

Kolashin is a small resort, 73 km north of Podgorica, on the left bank of the Tara River, 960 metres above sea level. It is surrounded by three mountain ranges - Sinyavina, Komova and Belasica. Today the municipality of Kolasin occupies 897 km2 with a population of about 3,000 people.

A settlement of Slavs was established here already in the early Middle Ages. The fertile lands of Kolasin, reliably protected from winds and cold by mountain "walls", have been a cause of dispute for centuries. The town-fortress, safely protecting mountain passes and approaches to the sea, was founded by the Turks who owned these lands at that time, in 1652. The town skirted the outpost of the caravan road via Podgorica to Bijelo Polje. Kolasin became part of Montenegro only at the end of the 19th century and almost immediately became a popular resort.
