Kotor

Kotor is a must-see place for tourists and travellers in Montenegro.

If you step off the main streets, you will find the ruins of an ancient prison and clothes lines on which locals dry their laundry. Kotor is not just a tourist destination, the locals still live in the Old Town, still do business and, the most important, still come to drink coffee in their favorite cafe and discuss the news with friends every day. Kotor is a lively city that preserves the soul of Montenegro.

Kotor is an ancient city in Montenegro, which was first mentioned in chronicles in 168 BC. Kotor was inhabited by the ancient Romans and was called Akruvium. Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in 535 was engaged in strengthening the city. But the appearance of the city was really formed during the Venetian reign (from 1420 to 1797). Now Kotor is one of the best preserved medieval cities on the Adriatic.

Until the end of World War I, Kotor was called Cattaro, an Italian name for Kotor. After the city became part of Yugoslavia, it was renamed to Kotor.
