Shavnik

In ancient times, the Montenegrin tribes Drobnjaci and Uskoci settled on the site of today's Shavnik. In historical sources the first settlement is mentioned in 1656. In 1702 the town was completely burned by the Turks. Later in 1861 the town was rebuilt and this date is considered to be the day of the foundation of Shavnik.

The first inhabitants of the town were craftsmen who came here from other regions of the country to work for the local farmers. Gradually, Shavnik became the central town of the Drobnjaci region, and a post office, school, courthouse and military post were built there.

However, by the time the railway was built, it had passed by the town - a fateful circumstance, the economy of Shavnik began to decline and the population dispersed to neighbouring regions.

The modern life of the municipality and the city is linked to tourism. High mountains, primeval forests, mountain rivers and dangerous canyons attract lovers of eco-tourism, beautiful nature and relaxation in natural surroundings. On the border with Niksic is the mountain massif Vojnik, covered in beech and pine forests, while the Komarnica river flows in the gorge nearby. To the east, the municipality is bounded by the mountain massif of Sinjaevina, covered in meadows and pastures, where animal husbandry is developed and where one can buy the natural dairy products and try many local specialties.
