Durmitor National Park

City

Durmitor National Park is a huge nature reserve, a unique landscape area, which beauty and significance extends far beyond Montenegro. The park became a separate territory in 1952, since 1980 Durmitor is a part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The reserve is located in the southern part of Montenegro, covering a mountainous area of around 34,000 hectares. The highest peak is Mount Bobotov Kuk (2523 metres above the sea level). There are springs and glacial lakes with a perfect round shape filled with the purest water. Pine, fir and broad-leaved forests, alpine and sub-alpine meadows, many relict plants, many of them endemic to these places, are preserved here. Nature lovers come here to see an extraordinary fauna and flora of the Reserve Durmitor. There you can see red foxes, brown bears, wolves, mountain goats, martens, chamois, hares, European otters, altogether over 300 animal species, many of which are endangered worldwide and are protected under the Red Book. More than 170 species of birds, 150 different species of butterflies, more than 1.5 thousand plant species…And this is according to rough estimates. The Tara River canyon shore is famous for its unique primeval black pine forests. There are very few forests of this type in the world. The local black pine is a 45-metre tall beauty, about 400 years old.
