Virpazar
In the southeastern part of Montenegro on the shore of Lake Skadar there is a small village of Virpazar. It was once a large city at the crossroads of trade routes. Now it is a small village, known for its rich history and picturesque views. In contrast to other famous cities in Montenegro, Virpazar is located on the shore of Lake Skadar, on the other side of the mountain range. It is surrounded by rivers Orahovshtitsa and Crmnica, that is why many people call it "Venice of Montenegro". In Virpazar there are only 337 permanent residents.
The settlement called Vir was known as far back as 1242. It was founded on the bank of the river with a whirlpool, where the locals organized a small market. It is from here that Virpazar got its name: "vir" – a river whirlpool, "pazar" – a market.
Thanks to its advantageous commercial position, the city has always had a great impact on the economic and political life of the country. At the beginning of the twentieth century the railway was built in Virpazar, and afterwards - one of the largest ports on Lake Skadar.
