Niksic

The town of Niksic emerged in the fourth century "on the basis" of the military camp of Anderba (Castrum Anderba), built by the Romans. In their place came the Ostrogoths in the 5th century, who also built a stronghold. It was named Anagastum. A few centuries later the area was occupied by the Slavs. They named the fortress and the town Onogost. During the conquest of Serbia the Turks renewed and strengthened the fortress. They gave it the name Bedem ("wall"). The Ottomans held the town until 1877, by which time it was already called Niksic. After the liberation, the town started to receive a lot of visitors, and it was developing at a rapid pace. In the 1880s the authorities adopted the Niksic development plan. It was carried out by the engineer Josip Slade. The same one who designed the famous Lovceni serpentine. One only has to look at the town from above to see that it was indeed built according to the plan. The central square and the streets that spread out from it like solar beams catch the eye. Tourists may be familiar to the town of Niksic by the beer that is made there. It is called Nikšićko.
