The monastery of Cetinje

The monastery of Cetinje is an Orthodox monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in the ancient capital of Montenegro, Cetinje. It was built in 1484 by Ivan Crnojevic, but it was destroyed in 1692 by the Turks. The monastery was renewed during the reign of the lord Danila. In 1714, the monastery was damaged by fire, and was rebuilt in 1743, by the Montenegrin metropolitan Savva Ivanovich Njegos. The last reconstruction took place in 1927. The monastery keeps priceless relics such as the right hand of John the Baptist, relics of St. Petar of Cetinje (Petar I Petrovic Njegos), fragments of the Holy Cross on which the Saviour was crucified, the first printed book of the South Slavs , the Oktoeh (1494) and the crown of King Stefan Decani.
