Old Bar

City

Old Bar is a historical part of the town, which was erected in the 11th century at the foot of Mount Rumija, at an altitude of 110 m, 4 km from the sea. From here the town began "moving" towards the sea. The old medieval town was abandoned by its inhabitants but it was not destroyed. 240 buildings of different purposes, narrow stone-paved streets and small squares remained from that period. The oldest one is the 11th century city gate.

Old Bar was badly damaged after the explosion of a gunpowder warehouse in 1878, so most of its buildings are picturesque ruins today. Thus, one can see the ruins of St. George's Cathedral, built in the XI century, as well as the well-preserved remains of the Omerbasic Mosque, with its minaret and rooms for pilgrims, built in the XVII century, which housed the tomb of Dervis-Hachan.

The fortress wall of Old Bar has an impressive view of the sea, New Bar and the port.
