Lake Slano was created as a result of the construction of a hydroelectric power station Perucica in 1950. Shallow pools and small plains on Niksic fields were flooded. As a result, three big lakes, connected by canals, were formed.
They were given the common name of Slano, which translates as "The Salt Lake". Initially the purpose of the reservoir was industrial, but later locals and tourists began to use it for recreation.
A new body of water turned out to be quite large, with an area of 9 square kilometres and a length of 4.5 km. The water level in the lake depends on the season, it is higher when snow melts and it rains, and it is lower in drought. During the high waters, small but beautiful waterfalls can be observed here.
Also don’t forget about numerous islands that can be found all over the area. In fact, most of them are the tops of flooded hills.
